Without commentary, without opinion from me, I'm am passing along some comments and thoughts on the FISA debate.
Please, take a few minutes, and contact your own senators and representatives.
Senator Feingold's take
I'm not the only one with friends or relatives outside of the US. Each and every contact, whether by phone or email, made by a US citizen to another country makes the contents of those communications open to the government eavesdroppers AND makes that same US citizen open to future scrutiny. No warrant, no oversight.
Summarizing what is posted on Daily Kos, here are other issues in the legislation that some Democrats and most Republicans are capitulating on:
- Oversight of Intelligence activities
- Exclusivity of FISA
- Review of the Bush / Cheney warrantless wiretapping program.
- Ensure the timely review of expanded authorities
- Access to FISA court docs
- Prohibit the use of illegally obtained information
- Limit "bulk collections"
- Require a warrant when targeting US persons
- Provide an alternative to blanket immunity for the telecoms
